What sets me apart as a practitioner of Classical Acupuncture?

TCM treats what is called the primary channels. Primary channels are the pathways that carry what is happening right now. They support awareness, daily rhythm, breathing, and heartbeat. As each day unfolds, they hold both the habits we have already formed and the possibility of change. Treating the primary channels can help rebalance the body, refocus energy where it might be needed; heal the here and now. There are many strong, proven schools and fantastic practitioners in this field.

At the end of my TCM training though, I asked myself; where do we treat the deep-seated pain, the long-standing health concerns, the trauma? What I found was Classical Acupuncture and the complementary channels.

Complement channels (Luo vessels, divergent channels, and extraordinary vessels) hold what the primary channels cannot process in the moment. Experiences that arrive too fast or too intensely—shock, trauma, injury, accumulated toxins—are stored in the body’s vital substances until they can be addressed. This is why many long-standing patterns live at this deeper level rather than on the surface meridians.

In clinic this distinction guides treatment:

  • Acute issues and flare-ups of internal conditions often respond well to primary-channel work.

  • Chronic health presentations as well as conditions linked to trauma are usually treated at the complement-channel level, because that is where the original load is held.

This is also why you found dry-needling worked for you when you were 30, but it does not now in your 50’s. The issue had been held by the vital substances, but now they are loosing the strength to hold what they once could.

The aim is not to force a story or a diagnosis, but to meet the body where the imbalance actually lives so regulation can occur. And here we can truly affect life-changing results.
